Young prospects, like Domonic Brown, come up through major league farm systems with great expectations. Often times they do not instantly produce like the Fantasy studs they are projected to one day become. Last week, we discussed post-hype sleepers, and how taking a chance on one of them could net you a potential keeper in your long-term league. This week, we will take a proactive look at players who are not currently garnering as much attention as they should be. With the fast-paced, ‘information at your fingertips society’ we live in, a savvy keeper/dynasty owner should be keeping tabs on just about every player that comes up to the majors. At times it can be a challenge to find players or prospects that are not hyped by someone, somewhere.
Back in 2004, Robinson Cano hit .283/.339/.457 with 27 doubles, 10 triples and 13 HRs on his way to becoming the Yankees Minor League Player of the Year. Despite this, he did not make Baseball America’s Top 100 Prospects list, and in general, not viewed as an elite talent around baseball. He was called up in 2005 and has not been out of the Yankees lineup since. His true Fantasy breakout took a few seasons, but he added power as he matured and has hit for average year in and year out. He has since turned himself into the best Fantasy second baseman in the game.
